Algarve is the southern most region of Portugal, and its capital is Faro. Linda is a city to the north that hosts the region called Alentejo, and to the southeast all along the coastline runs the Atlantic Ocean. To the east lies the Guadiana River as well as the Spanish-Portuguese border. In the northern most point of Algarve are the Sierra de Monchique Mountains with its highest peak, the Pico da Foia, that has an altitude of 902 meters. The main cities of Algarve and of the Province of Faro are: Albufeira, Portimao, Lagoa, Lagos, Vilamoura, Lole, Olhao, Quarteira, Silves, Tavira, and Vila Real do Santo Antonio (in which lies the Monte Gordo - Fat Mountain). These cities are located all along the coastline of Southern Portugal, and are well known for their paradise seaside beaches, delicious gastronomy, and for many outdoor sports that are frequently practised in the area such as kitesurf, surf, golf, etcetera and, above all, they are known for their pituresque beauty, all making thes cities a fantastic holiday destination.
Aside from the fantastic beaches you will find here, there are also other spots of marvellous, natural beautyin the area, which is one of the many reasons that the Province of Faro is the most touristic destination in all of Portugal. Inside this province is Vilamoura and its glamorous Marina. In Loule resides one of the most important tourism sites in the southern continent, the Falesia Beach. Alfubeira is considered the tourist capital, as it holds Rocha Beach amongst other attractions. Portimao has Alvor Beach, an internationally known place to practice surf, kitesurf, and windsurf.
In Algarve, the mountains and the sea have always been present here, and have been enjoyed over the centuries by many. The interior of Algarve holds a wealth of natural reserves and countryside, and along the coast you will discover many breathtaking beaches, coves, caves, etc., that some say are the prettiest beaches in all of Europe. Don´t forget to visit the Island of Tavira, a magical place to spend a day with the sand, sun, and sea.
The aromas and flavors of traditional Algarvean cuisine are also important to mention. Main ingredients to most dishes located in restaurants near the coast consist of fresh fish, and seafood.
In the interior of Algarve, there are other plates to choose from, that are equally fresh in nature, and consist of fresh meats and vegetables from the surrounding countryside.
At night, you have many options of things to do. In the interior, you can relax in the tranquility of the surrounding countryside, or if you are feeling more adventurous, you can check out the many bars, discos, casinos, or the Marina and dance and party until the sun rises.
Algarve is an ideal place to spend your vacation. It is surrounded by nature, fine golden sand beaches, has plenty of outdoor sport activities to choose from, a fabulous gastronomy, plenty of places to shop and explore, all in easy reach. |
