With an extension of aproximately 5,000 kilomerters squared, Algarve has a residident population that is distributed over 16 big cities, with a total of almost 400,000 inhabitants in total. Situated in the extreme West of Europe, Southern Portugal has a population density of about 80 inhabitants per squared kilometer, and a span of coastline that runs about 150 kilometers. Algarve is subdivided into three large areas, each one with breathtaking landscape to see.
The coastline is the first of them, and is where most of the activity takes place in this region. The seaside here is fairly diverse, and you will find some beaches with extensive stretches of fine sand, and others with coves, caves, and still others with lagoons and wetlands, or with rolling sand dunes.
Between the mountains and the sea, is a zone called El Barrocal, which is where most of the agricultural activity happens in Algarve.
Lastly, the Sierra (Mountains), which is about 50% of the territory of Algarve, has lovely places to visit such as the Espinhaco de Cao or the Sierra de Monchique, where you will find Foia, the highest peak in Algarve, measuring about 900 meters in altitude.
